The Looking-Glass Self was a theory developed by Charles Cooley in 1902 that described the process wherein we form our self-identity based on how we believed to be perceived by others. He believed that we used our interaction with others as a type of “mirror,” and those judgements would help shape our self-concept. If this were true, our children would form an identity based on information that we gave them about themselves and we would see the development of those identities over time. If we really understood this, we would pay close attention to the media that we let our children consume, especially if they were watching people who looked like them.
Cyberpsychologist Dr. Mary Aiden took this theory a step further to add social media as a “Cyber-Self” version of the Looking Glass Self. In this she suggests that we shape our digital public identities based on what we perceived would be “Liked” by others. Aiken shares that “selfies ask the question: Do YouLike me like this?“
