Tuning Our Instruments By Dr. Bruce Purnell
Before the band plays and we focus our sights,
Before the songs move us from days into nights,
Before the effect, the butterfly must find its wings
And before Spirit rings, the FEVERS must sing.
And some instruments learned how to hide,
Built from the pain we carried inside.
Strings made from tears, drum beats playing rhythms of fears,
Sounds reflecting the pain from too many years
It’s Joy finding pathways where darkness once lived,
Love is the energy, and the scope is to forgive.
So we tune with Hope, we recalibrate Peace,
We realign Purpose and ask pain to release.
We mend what was broken, and Love is where it starts.
Joy is the truth, and forgiveness fills our hearts.
This music we carry becomes the vibration we bring,
And healing begins when our Butterflies sing.
Before the Performance Begins, the Instruments Must Be Tuned
Every musician knows that before a performance begins, the instruments must be tuned. Tuning is not a sign of lack of talent but a necessity, because even gifted musicians create distortion when they are out of alignment. The same is true in healing and transformation work. Many of us learned to survive, function, and appear strong, but very few of us were taught to tune ourselves emotionally, spiritually, relationally, and intentionally. This is why Tuning Our Instruments is essential to healing and transformation. After building our bands and naming our ensembles, we now examine the instruments we carry into our lives and communities.
Some of our instruments were built to help us survive past trauma.
• Hypervigilance
• Emotional suppression
• Distrust
• Isolation
• Overworking
These tools may have protected us at one time, but they do not always create harmony.
Transformation requires different instruments:
• Love
• Joy
• Hope
• Peace
• Purpose
• Forgiveness
This is where the FEVERS becomes our tuning system, inviting us to examine not only what we do but also the frequency, energy, and vibration that guide our steps.
Are we leading from fear or from alignment?
Are we creating noise or healing?
Are we responding from trauma or from transformation?
Healing is not just about building the band; it is about learning to play in tune with ourselves, our purpose, and our communities. More important than hearing our words is feeling our frequency.
The Bridge of Reflection
Thus far, we have selected our healing ensemble, created our Sixth Sound, and named our bands. We have identified who we trust, the energies we value, and the roles we believe are necessary for healing and transformation.
Now, in the Spirit of Dr. Norma Harris, we take a sacred pause before moving forward. This bridge session is designed to help us reflect on what our bands represent. The deeper question is no longer “Who is in our band?”
We now interpret our reflection in an understanding of:
• What kind of healing does this band embody?
• What kind of universe is this band trying to create?
• What frequencies does this band amplify?
• Which systems, environments, and relationships would this band transform?
• Is there alignment among affirmations, consciousness, intentions, thoughts, and behaviors?
This reflection prepares us for the simulation’s next phase:
Tuning the Instruments through FEVERS.
Part 1 — Presenting Our Band
Each journeyer or group shares:
• The name of our band
• The five selected roles
• The Sixth Sound
• Why we chose this combination
• What our band represents
Part 2 — Transformation Reflection
Transformation Questions
Transformation is the process of aligning with our deeper truth rather than being defined by pain, limitation, or survival.
Reflection Questions:
• How does our band support transformation rather than survival alone?
• What parts of ourselves are we attempting to heal, reclaim, or grow?
• What does our band reveal about the kind of people we are becoming?
• What “caterpillar mindsets” are we attempting to transform into butterflies?
Part 3 — Healing Reflection
Healing Questions
Healing is more than removing pain; it involves restoring alignment, connection, meaning, and wholeness.
Reflection Questions:
• What wounds or struggles is our band responding to?
• What frequencies of healing does our band amplify?
• How would people feel in spaces our ensemble creates?
• What role do Love, Joy, Hope, Peace, Purpose, and Forgiveness play in our band?
Part 4 — Social Alchemy Reflection
What Is Social Alchemy?
Social alchemy is the intentional transformation of pain, trauma, struggle, and limitations into wisdom, healing, purpose, and possibility.
Reflection Questions:
• What “raw materials” are we transforming?
• How does our ensemble turn pain into purpose?
• What emotional or social frequencies are we attempting to shift?
• How does our band create beauty or meaning from hardship?
Part 5 — Social Architecture Reflection
What Is Social Architecture?
Social architecture is the intentional design of environments, relationships, systems, and cultures that foster healing, humanity, and transformation.
Reflection Questions:
• What kind of environment would our band create?
• How would people feel in spaces designed by our ensemble?
• What systems or social norms would our band challenge?
• What do brave spaces, safety, belonging, and healing look like within our ecosystem?
Part 6 — Social Entrepreneurship Reflection
What Is Social Entrepreneurship?
Social entrepreneurship focuses on developing sustainable solutions to social problems while creating long-term community impact.
Reflection Questions:
• If our band became a movement or organization, what problem would it solve?
• How would our frequency create a ripple?
• What would our “healing and transformation tour” look like in real life?
• What resources, partnerships, or opportunities would we create?
Part 7 — Naming the Frequency
Now that we understand our band more deeply, we ask:
• What frequency does our band carry most strongly?
• What emotional or spiritual energy enters the room when our band appears?
• What do we want people to remember after experiencing our presence?
Transition into our tuning: Step 2
Tuning the Instruments with FEVERS
Once we understand who is in our band and what it represents, we must ask: Are our instruments in tune? Even the most powerful band can create confusion if its instruments are out of alignment. This is where FEVERS becomes essential. Just as musicians tune their instruments before performing, we must tune our emotional, relational, spiritual, and psychological frequencies before we attempt to heal, lead, or transform communities.
Tuning invites us to examine:
• The instruments we carry
• The frequencies we lead with
• Whether our tools are rooted in survival or transformation
