Today is the Day By Dr. Bruce Purnell
Procrastination is a quiet thief,
It doesn’t shout, it softly steals belief.
It whispers, “Tomorrow will be better, you’ll see,”
While today slips by without becoming destiny.
Dreams don’t die from lack of vision,
They fade from a delayed decision.
From sacred ideas we never start,
From untaken steps born in the heart.
Love More and move in the now,
We have our “Why”, stop waiting for how.
The cocoon is not a place for the butterfly to hide,
It must step through the chrysalis, or it would never fly.
So whatever you pushed to “one day soon,”
Whatever you promised beneath the moon,
Don’t put it off another day
Just start right now; don’t fear the way.
Because tomorrow is never known,
Don’t let the graveyard be your dreams’ home.
Let this be the day your dream is no longer delayed.
Love More, Act Now, there’s no more time to play
Before we tune our families and communities, we must first learn how to tune the instruments within. This Butterfly Monday, we continue our journey through I Have the FEVERS for Jazz: becoming the Butterfly Effect as we explore what it truly means to tune our instruments to the pitch of the FEVERS::
• Frequency of Loving More
• Energy of Joy
• Vibration of Hope
• Elevation of Peace
• Reflection of Divine Purpose
• Scope of Forgiveness
Together, we will examine:
• The emotional, psychological, and spiritual frequencies we carry into our relationships
• The survival instruments we developed through pain
• The difference between functioning and alignment
• Why healing begins with us before it ripples outward
Because the first band we must learn to heal is ourselves.
This session will include:
Healing is not just about the sound we make, but is about the frequency, energy, and vibration we emit.
The First Band We Must Heal Is Ourselves
Before any great band performs, a sacred process takes place first. The instruments are tuned. Not because the musicians lack talent, but because talent without alignment creates distortion. The same principle applies to healing and transformation.
Many of us learned to survive, function, and keep moving while quietly carrying emotional exhaustion, fear, grief, and unresolved pain. However, survival and healing are not always the same thing.
A person can appear successful while feeling internally disconnected.
A family can function while emotionally fractured.
A community can survive while carrying generations of unresolved trauma.
This is why tuning matters.
In I Have the FEVERS for Jazz, FEVERS becomes our tuning system:
• Frequency of Loving More
• Energy of Joy
• Vibration of Hope
• Elevation of Peace
• Reflection of Divine Purpose
• Scope of Forgiveness
These are not just a group of positive ideas, but frequencies that influence how we think, relate, respond, and heal.
When Love decreases, disconnection increases.
When Joy disappears, hopelessness grows.
When Peace is absent, nervous systems remain exhausted.
When Purpose is unclear, people struggle to see meaning beyond survival.
Healing begins when we intentionally recalibrate these frequencies, and it is essential to realize that the first band we must calibrate is within ourselves. Before we attempt to create a ripple to heal families, communities, systems, and the world, we must first examine the frequencies operating within us.
What emotional music have we been carrying?
What rhythms were created through trauma?
What survival instruments have we mistaken for healing?
This is not about perfection, but radical love, forgiveness, intention, and awareness.
Because the world may hear our words, but the multiverse feels our vibration. Moreover, the healing ripple we affirm will begin with the frequency, energy, vibration, elevation, reflection, and scope we produce internally.
Before the Butterfly Effect changes the world, the butterfly must first learn how to tune its own wings.
FEVERS, Alignment, and the Sound of Healing
We have now assembled the band and selected the people, energies, and roles we believe are essential to healing and transformation. We created our Sixth Sound, named our ensemble, and began defining the impact we want to have in the world. Now we reach another important realization: Even the greatest band cannot create harmony if its instruments are out of tune.
Talent alone does not create alignment, and good intentions alone do not create healing. Having the right people around us does not automatically mean we are emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and relationally prepared to move in harmony. Before the music begins, the instruments must be tuned. This section explores what it means to tune ourselves through FEVERS and why alignment matters before we attempt to transform our families, communities, and systems.
Why Tuning Is Essential To Healing and Transformation
Every musician knows that before a performance begins, instruments must be calibrated. Even the most gifted musicians introduce distortion when their instruments are misaligned. The same principle applies to healing and transformation. Many of us learned to survive in environments marked by instability, pain, fear, unpredictability, and emotional suppression. We developed emotional instruments as a form of protection.
Some of those instruments sounded like:
• Hypervigilance
• Emotional numbness
• Isolation
• Distrust/paranoia
• Overworking
• Performing strength while hiding pain
These survival instruments may have protected us at one point in our lives, but protection and healing are not always the same. A person can survive without feeling Love, Joy, Hope, Peace, Purpose, and Forgiveness. A family can function without feeling emotionally connected. A community can appear strong while carrying unresolved grief and trauma.
This is why tuning matters. Healing is more than what we do; it is the frequency we carry.
Understanding FEVERS as a Healing Modality
FEVERS is the tuning system for this simulation:
• Frequency of Loving More
• Energy of Joy
• Vibration of Hope
• Elevation of Peace
• Reflection of Divine Purpose
• Scope of Forgiveness
These six dimensions work together as an emotional, relational, spiritual, and transformational framework for alignment. FEVERS is not simply inspirational language, but a healing and transformation modality rooted in:
• Psychology
• Hope Theory
• Healing Justice
• Trauma research
• Neuroscience
• Sociology
• Relational theory
• African-centered healing traditions
• Quantum Physics
• Indigenous Healing Practices
FEVERS helps us examine:
• The emotional frequencies we carry
• The energy we bring into relationships
• The ways unresolved trauma shapes our behaviors
• How alignment influences healing outcomes
Frequency of Loving More
Love is often misunderstood as simply an emotion.
Research in attachment theory shows that safe, loving relationships directly shape emotional regulation, resilience, identity formation, and long-term mental health. Psychologists John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth found that people develop differently when they experience emotional safety, care, and consistency. Bell Hooks deepens this understanding by explaining that love is not merely a feeling but a practice involving care, trust, commitment, accountability, and presence. When we increase the Frequency of Loving More:
• We strengthen relationships
• We reduce emotional isolation
• We increase empathy and compassion
• We create environments where healing feels possible
Love changes nervous systems, environments, and possibilities.
Energy of Joy
Joy is not shallow happiness, but an energy that restores movement, creativity, imagination, and emotional expansion. Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory explains that positive emotional experiences help human beings:
• Think more creatively
• Build stronger relationships
• Increase resilience
• Recover from stress more effectively
Joy literally expands our emotional and cognitive capacity. For many under-loved communities, joy has historically functioned as resistance, survival, and reclamation. Joy has the power to interrupt hopelessness and reminds us that survival is not the final destination.
Vibration of Hope
Hope is not pretending pain does not exist. Hope is the belief that movement, possibility, and transformation remain available. Psychologist C.R. Snyder’s Hope Theory explains that hope requires:
• Vision
• Pathways toward that vision
• Belief in our ability to move forward
Without hope:
• Trauma narratives become fixed
• Motivation decreases
• Emotional exhaustion increases
Hope creates movement and allows us to imagine futures larger than our current pain.
Elevation of Peace
Peace is more than silence or the absence of conflict. Peace is regulation and the foundation of well-being. Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, explains that the human nervous system constantly scans for danger or safety. Many individuals living with unresolved trauma remain in chronic states of emotional activation, anxiety, or shutdown.
Peace allows the nervous system to settle long enough to experience:
• Reflection
• Connection
• Vulnerability
• Healing
Peace helps the body understand: “I am safe enough to breathe here.”
Reflection of Divine Purpose
Purpose gives direction to healing. Research in meaning-making and existential psychology consistently shows that people connected to purpose demonstrate:
• Greater resilience
• Higher emotional endurance
• Stronger long-term well-being
• Increased motivation during adversity
Na’im Akbar’s work reminds us that healing involves reclaiming identity beyond imposed narratives and reconnecting with our humanity and our calling. Purpose transforms survival into intention.
Scope of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is not forgetting the harm or removing accountability. It is often about releasing the emotional burden that keeps us psychologically and spiritually attached to pain.
Research on forgiveness consistently shows connections to:
• Reduced stress
• Improved emotional health
• Better cardiovascular functioning
• Lower anxiety and depression
Forgiveness creates room for healing.
The Healing Litmus Test
Using the FEVERS as a Universal Lens for Healing and Transformation and Expanding the Purpose of the Healing Litmus Test
The Healing Litmus Test is not simply designed to measure how much Love, Joy, Hope, Peace, Purpose, or Forgiveness currently exists in our lives. Its deeper purpose is to help us develop awareness.
The FEVERS becomes a universal lens, a sacred pause, and a discernment tool that helps us examine:
• Ourselves
• Other people
• Relationships
• Environments
• Opportunities
• Systems
• Situations
• Decisions
• Emotional energies
The goal is to help us ask:
Does this represent healing and transformation, or something else?
Many people move through life reacting automatically.
• We enter relationships without reflection.
• We accept environments without discernment.
• We normalize emotional frequencies that slowly disconnect us from ourselves.
Over time, we may become conditioned to:
• Chaos
• Emotional exhaustion
• Fear
• Performance
• Survival
• Disconnection
And when these frequencies become familiar, we may mistake them for normal.
This is why the FEVERS is an essential tool for healing and transformation. It gives us a sacred framework for pausing and assessing the frequencies operating within and around us.
The Sacred Pause (Dr. Norma Harris)
Before reacting, attaching, committing, responding, or absorbing energy, we pause.
The sacred pause is the intentional decision to stop long enough to examine:
• What we are feeling
• What frequency is present
• What emotional energy is being amplified
• Whether something supports alignment or disruption
The sacred pause interrupts automatic survival responses and creates space for conscious discernment.
Using FEVERS as a Universal Litmus Test
The FEVERS becomes the filter through which we examine life experiences.

The FEVERS can be used to examine:
• Friendships
• Romantic relationships
• Family dynamics
• Work environments
• Social media engagement
• Leadership
• Organizations
• Opportunities
• Conversations
• Community spaces
• Systems and policies
Examples of the Litmus Test in Action

After spending time with someone, I ask:
• Did I feel emotionally safe?
• Did this interaction increase Peace or anxiety?
• Did I leave feeling hopeful or emotionally depleted?
Example 2 — Work Environments
Before accepting an opportunity, I ask:
• Does this align with my purpose?
• Will this environment support healing or burnout?
• What emotional frequency dominates this space?
Example 3 — Social Media
After scrolling online, I ask:
• Did this content increase Hope or fear?
• Did it create a connection or a comparison?
• Did it nourish my Spirit or exhaust my nervous system?
The Healing Litmus Test Exercise
Practicing Sacred Discernment
Part 1 — Internal FEVERS Assessment
Before examining others, I begin with myself.
Reflection Questions
• What frequency dominates my internal world lately?
• What emotional music have I been carrying?
• What survival frequencies have become normalized in me?
• What frequency of FEVERS feels strongest?
• What FEVERS frequency needs attention?
Part 2 — The Sacred Pause Practice
Think about a current relationship, environment, or situation.
Pause before judging it.
Now move through the FEVERS slowly.
Frequency Reflection
Loving More: Do I feel emotionally safe and valued here?
Joy: Do I feel emotionally alive or emotionally drained?
Hope: Does this increase possibility or hopelessness?
Peace: Does my nervous system feel regulated here?
Purpose: Does this align with who I am becoming?
Forgiveness: Is there unresolved pain or emotional weight here?
Part 3 — The Environment Scan
Choose one environment you regularly enter:
• Home
• Work
• School
• Relationship
• Social space
• Community organization
Now ask:
• What frequency dominates this space?
• What frequency is missing?
• What emotional energy is normalized here?
• What impact is this having on my healing?
Part 4 — The Ripple Reflection
The FEVERS remind us that:
• Frequencies spread
• Emotions ripple
• Energy transfers relationally
Reflection:
• What frequencies do I consistently bring into rooms?
• What frequencies do people likely feel from me?
• What ripple am I creating in my family and community?
The Deeper Purpose of the FEVERS
The FEVERS is not designed to make us hypercritical of people or situations, but to increase awareness. The goal is discernment, not perfection.
Discernment helps us:
• Protect our Peace
• Strengthen alignment
• Recognize harmful frequencies
• Move intentionally
• Build healing-centered relationships and environments
Closing Reflection
As the band prepares to move through WizOz, journeyers begin to realize that not every sound represents healing, and not every frequency represents alignment. Some sounds create confusion, fear, hopelessness, and normalize survival while disconnecting people from their humanity. This realization changes how the band moves through the world.
The FEVERS becomes more than a framework.
It becomes:
• A tuning system
• A navigation tool
• A discernment practice
• A sacred pause
• A universal healing litmus test
The band begins understanding that healing is not only about what they create, but also about:
• What they allow
• What they normalize
• What they absorb
• What they amplify
And before they can transform communities, they must first learn how to recognize the frequencies operating within and around them.
Before the Butterfly Effect becomes external, it begins internally. Before we transform environments, we must learn how to discern them, and before we heal the world, we must first understand:
• What frequencies do we carry?
• What frequencies do we absorb?
• And what frequencies we choose to amplify
Because eventually, the music we embody becomes the soundtrack of our lives.
We are becoming the “Social Architects” and “Social Alchemists” who will design our healing and transformation. Let’s affirm and manifest our divine cocoons together. #WeAreTheButterflyEffect
