The Final Soundcheck by Dr. Bruce Purnell
We built the Band and found our tone,
Then, we learned the first stage was our own.
We tuned with Love, Joy, Hope, and Peace.
And allowed painful songs a way to release.
We stood through the rain and heard the plea,
To change the station to a frequency that’s free.
The book now helps us find our way,
To pause, reflect, and clearly say,
The music lives in what we do,
The Butterfly Effect starts in you.
So read, remember, trust your part,
The final soundcheck starts within your heart.
This Butterfly Monday, we will pause, reflect, and review the journey we have taken through I Have the FEVERS for Jazz: Becoming the Butterfly Effect. We have built our Band, discovered our Sixth Sound, tuned our instruments, used the FEVERS as a Healing and Transformation Litmus Test, stood in the rain, navigated our breakdowns, changed the station through D.E.A.R., and prepared for the BEAUTY and Ripple Tour. Now it is time for the final soundcheck.
The take-home exam will be distributed by the end of the week. It will be open-book, and the class will have one full week to complete it. The book itself will serve as the study guide, and the specific pages and topics to focus on will be shared by the end of the week. This review session is designed to help us reconnect the major ideas, identify the concepts we understand well, notice where we need more clarity, and prepare to respond from understanding rather than memorization.
Come with your book, your questions, your notes, and your willingness to listen to the full composition. The exam does not ask us to perform perfectly but invites us to demonstrate our understanding of the music, how the concepts connect, and how the FEVERS can be applied to our lives, relationships, families, communities, and the world. The Band has rehearsed, the book is our map, and now we listen, review, and prepare to share what the journey has taught us.
The Final Soundcheck: Preparing to Hear the Whole Composition
As we prepare for the take-home exam, it may help to remember that this journey was never built around memorizing disconnected facts. Every section of I Have the FEVERS for Jazz: Becoming the Butterfly Effect was designed to flow naturally into the next, just as one movement of a Jazz composition creates space for another.
We began by learning why Jazz is our guiding metaphor. Jazz taught us that each instrument has its own genius, every voice contributes, and every musician must learn to listen while developing an authentic sound. From there, we built our Band, discovered the Sixth Sound, and explored how the people and roles we choose reveal what we believe healing requires.
Once the Band was assembled, we learned that even gifted musicians can create distortion when their instruments are out of tune. The FEVERS became our tuning system, helping us explore the Frequency of Loving More, the Energy of Joy, the Vibration of Hope, the Elevation of Peace, the Reflection of Divine Purpose, and the Scope of Forgiveness. We then discovered that the FEVERS could become a Healing and Transformation Litmus Test, a sacred pause that helps us listen to ourselves, our relationships, our environments, and the situations we encounter. The FEVERS gave us a way to ask whether a person, place, opportunity, or experience supports healing and transformation, or pulls us toward fear, depletion, confusion, and old survival frequencies.
When the Band entered the breakdown, we learned that a crisis does not simply interrupt the music. It reveals the sound we default to under pressure. We explored Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn and began to understand our responses with compassion rather than shame. We learned that standing in the rain does not mean the storm disappears, but that we are developing the capacity to maintain our rhythm, listen to our bodies, and remain connected to the FEVERS as we move through difficulty.
Through D.E.A.R., we learned that transformation requires a process. We deconstruct the old programming, evolve by adopting and embodying the FEVERS, affirm the new frequency we intend to manifest, and reconstruct our lives around healing and transformation. The proclamation helps us name the sound we choose, while D.E.A.R. provides a pathway to embodying it.
Finally, the BEAUTY and Ripple Tour reminded us that the first band we must heal is ourselves. From there, the ripple moves through our families, social institutions, communities, nation, and world. Healing becomes the Butterfly Effect when the frequency we cultivate within us begins to change the way we relate, lead, design, serve, and share humanity. The take-home exam gives us an opportunity to listen back to the entire composition.
Because it is open-book, the challenge is not in memorization but in learning to locate the ideas, understand the relationships among them, and explain how they apply to real life. The book serves as the study guide, and the specific pages and topics of focus will be provided by the end of the week. We will have one week to complete the exam, which gives us time to pause, reread, reflect, and respond thoughtfully.
As we prepare, the most useful questions may be these:
• How did each step prepare us for the next?
• What concepts changed the way we understand healing?
• How have the FEVERS become a filter for navigating our lives?
• What sound are we now choosing to carry into the world?
This is our final soundcheck, not the end of our music, but a chance to hear how much we have learned, how deeply we have reflected, and how intentionally we are becoming the Butterfly Effect.
Reflection Points
Listening Back to the Journey
Use these questions to identify what you understand clearly and where you may need to return to the book.
The Roots and Purpose

How does the simulation define healing as personal, relational, systemic, and collective?
Why are we called journeyers, and how does that shared identity help us move beyond labels that divide or diminish our humanity?
How do WEB, the Wisdom of Elders and Butterflies, African-centered consciousness, ancestral wisdom, Indigenous consciousness, Eastern philosophy, elders, and interdisciplinary theories contribute to the roots of the simulation?
Why is Jazz an effective metaphor for healing and transformation?
Building and Tuning the Band
What did selecting the Band reveal about trust, values, support, and healing?
What is the Sixth Sound, and why was the Band named after it?
What does being in tune sound and feel like?
How does the continuum from distortion to harmony help us understand healing as movement rather than a fixed label?
The FEVERS
How does each FEVERS dimension support healing and transformation?
How can the FEVERS be used as a Healing and Transformation Litmus Test?
What is the sacred pause, and how does it help us respond more intentionally?
How can people, places, and things affect the acoustics of our lives?
The Breakdown
Which survival response do I recognize most clearly in myself: Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn?
What did the breakdown reveal about the frequencies I default to under pressure?
How can the FEVERS help us stand in the rain without becoming the storm?
D.E.A.R.
Why must old programming be deconstructed before a new sound can be reconstructed?
How does Evolution move the FEVERS from language into embodiment?
Why is Affirmation more than simply saying positive words?
What does Reconstruction look like in relationships, habits, environments, and systems?
The Ripple
Why does the Ripple Tour begin within us?
How does personal healing influence families, workplaces, schools, communities, the nation, and the world?
What does it mean to share humanity and become a steward of this beautiful planet?
What sound do I now intend to broadcast?
Review Exercises
Exercise 1: The Journey Map
Create a simple pathway using the following movements:
Introduction and Roots → Building the Band → Sixth Sound and Band Name → Tuning the Instruments → Healing Litmus Test → Breakdown → D.E.A.R. → BEAUTY and Ripple Tour
Under each movement, write:
The main idea
One key term
One theory or wisdom source connected to it
One way it applies to your life
The purpose is to view the simulation as a single, connected journey rather than a collection of separate chapters.
Exercise 2: The FEVERS Open-Book Soundcheck
Find the section of the book that explains each FEVERS dimension. For each one, record the page number, explain the concept in your own words, and give one real-life example. FEVERS Dimension Page Meaning in My Words Real-Life Example
Frequency of Loving More
Energy of Joy
Vibration of Hope
Elevation of Peace
Reflection of Divine Purpose
Scope of Forgiveness
This exercise will help you practice navigating the book before the exam begins.
Exercise 3: Teach It Back
Choose one concept from the simulation and explain it aloud as though you were introducing it to a new journeyer.
You may choose:
• The Sixth Sound
• The Healing Litmus Test
• The Sacred Pause
• Survival Consciousness
• WizOz
• The Breakdown
• D.E.A.R.
• WEB
• BEAUTY
• The Ripple Tour
After explaining it, ask yourself:
Did I define it clearly?
Did I connect it to the larger simulation?
Did I provide a real-life example?
Could I explain why it matters?
When we can teach an idea in a conversational way, we usually understand it more deeply.
Exercise 4: Build an Exam Question
Write one multiple-choice question and one short-answer question based on the book.
For the multiple-choice question, include four possible responses and identify the best answer.
For the short-answer question, write a model response using the book as support.
This exercise helps us begin thinking like both journeyers and teachers.
Exercise 5: The Red, Yellow, and Green Review
Review the major topics and mark each one:
Green, I understand this and can explain it.
Yellow, I understand part of it, but I need to review.
Red, I need additional clarification or support.
Suggested topics:
• Why Jazz
• Journeyers
• WEB
• The Band and Sixth Sound
• FEVERS
• The Healing Litmus Test
• Sacred Pause
• Distortion to Harmony
• Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn
• WizOz
• D.E.A.R.
• BEAUTY and the Ripple Tour
• Community’s Scale for Healing Possibilities
Your yellow and red areas become your personal review plan.
Exercise 6: Concept to Life
Choose one situation from your life involving a relationship, career decision, family pattern, institutional challenge, or personal well-being.
Then ask:
What old station or programming may be influencing this situation?
Which FEVERS frequency is most needed?
What would the sacred pause allow me to notice?
How might D.E.A.R. help me move from the old pattern toward reconstruction?
What ripple could my new response create?
This exercise prepares us to apply the material rather than only repeat it.

We are becoming the “Social Architects” and “Social Alchemists” who will design our healing and transformation.  Let’s affirm and manifest our divine cocoons together.
